Pentavalent Vaccine 14 November, 2009 - For the past month and a half, Sherab Wangchuk has been trying to erase a tragedy his family went through.

But every time he goes online, he is reminded of his 14-week-old daughter, who, he said, died after receiving the vaccine. The civil servant refuses to believe that the eight deaths were, “coincidental.”

On September 25, at around 10 am, Sherab’s daughter was given the 14th week injection, the third dose, at the Motithang satellite clinic. “Around 5:30 in the evening, I received a call from my wife and rushed home,” recalled the father. “She was having seizures and not breathing properly, so I took her to hospital immediately.”

At the hospital, Sherab was told by the doctor that it was a minor problem and that his daughter would be okay. “She was admitted and, when I asked, the doctor said that it might be because of the injection but that it’s not a big problem,” said the father.

After staying in the hospital for three nights, Sherub’s third child and only daughter died on the morning of September 28. The cause of her death was diagnosed as encephalopathy, which means brain disease, damage, or malfunction.
